It was an intriguing blend of gameplay that brought new challenges to both the city building and RTS genres. Sadly, after the release of Stronghold Crusader, the series slid in quality. With the last game, Stronghold Legends, the series materialized as only a shadow of the promise it once held a mediocre RTS that just happens to have castles. Even with the games suffering from poor execution in the later half of the franchise, the Strongholds other than Legends do offer up a heavy blend of combat and city builder that is unique to the series. There have been some city builders with combat like the Impressions games or the Settlers series, but none placed the same level of importance on martial matters. On the other side of the same token, there are very few RTS games that really bother to delve as deeply into economic simulation and city planning as Stronghold does. There certainly are games that do both sides better, but there are very few games that even attempt to blend the two facets together as strongly and evenly as the Stronghold games. Finally, especially in todays market, there are very few games that emphasize defensive strategy so heavily having abandoned base sieges for point capture victories and other objectives. For these reasons, RTS turtlers and city building fans that never got a chance to check out the Stronghold games may find this collection an easy way to experience the series for the first time. Most challenges in these games and fair warning, these games can be pretty challenging revolve around setting up castle walls to defend against inevitable enemy onslaught. But in order for your people to survive the siege and any destruction to productive outlying buildings, youll need to store up precious food, building materials, and weapons by setting up industry in and around your castle. If youve been itching to try the original Stronghold for the last nine years and havent yet found the motivation to get yourself to the store, this might be your chance. While the games dont look good, they still manage to be fun mostly and offer up some pretty challenging scenarios that take good timing and planning to execute properly. Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader are definitely worth a look and remain solid games. Stronghold 2 is probably worth a look for some of the added features though, while improved from when it was released originally, still has core gameplay and interface issues that can be a aggravating. Stronghold Legends moves almost completely away from what made the series special by removing the economic and civic aspects of play but does include mythical creatures if youre into that. Youll just need to decide whether the extra five bucks or so to get the three best games in one collection is worth it for the convenience of finding everything you need on one disc. Otherwise you may want to search for deals and collect the parts individually as theres not much reason I can think of to recommend Legends.
